Sand and grit is a heavy solid with a specific gravity greater than 1, so it accumulates and settles to the bottom of the tanks. The system then has to work harder to keep the sand suspended and allow oxygen to flow through the system to treat the water. Over time, this can drastically increase costs and detention times.
