Environmental Project Grants Available for Kentucky Municipal & School Organizations
From the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet news outlet comes this opportunity from Team Kentucky for municipalities, solid waste management districts, and schools to apply for grant funds for a wide range of healthy environmental initiatives.
Grant Funding Available to Support Clean, Healthy Communities
Application deadline is April 1, 2026
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 8, 2026) – Team Kentucky is accepting grant applications for projects that support a healthy community by developing recycling and composting infrastructure, educational programs, or household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events.
Local governments, solid waste management districts, public schools, universities and colleges are eligible to apply. Applications that support regional projects are given priority. Each grant requires a 25 percent local match.
“A healthy community starts with a healthy environment,” Gov. Beshear said. “When we support our communities in protecting our environment and promoting stewardship, we’re creating a New Kentucky Home, building a cleaner and more prosperous Kentucky for future generations.”
An estimated $5 million will be available in 2026. Funding comes from the Kentucky Pride Fund and is underwritten by a $1.75 per-ton fee on municipal solid waste disposed of in Kentucky’s contained landfills.
Last year, grants were awarded for recycling and composting equipment with the goal of promoting sustainable regional recycling infrastructure and creative solutions for managing food waste, lawn waste and other organic material. Funding was also provided for communities to conduct annual drop-off events where residents can dispose of household chemicals, old electronics and other potentially hazardous wastes.
“By offering grants for recycling, composting, and household hazardous waste initiatives, we aim to foster long-term environmental stewardship by empowering Kentucky communities to help manage their resources,” said Division of Waste Management Director Brian Osterman. “Together, we can keep recyclable, organic materials, and hazardous waste out of landfills and build a healthier, more resilient environment for future generations.”
Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered to the Division of Waste Management, Recycling and Local Assistance Branch at 300 Sower Blvd, Frankfort, KY 40601, or emailed to williamt.collins@ky.gov by 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2026. The original application and any supporting documentation must be submitted for an application to be complete. For more information, contact Grant White at 502-782-6474 or grant.white@ky.gov.
