Florida Sand and Grit Program Reimburses Cost of Cleaning Wastewater Tank Debris

The Florida Sand and Grit Grant Program is funding made available through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) for public utilities with an average annual daily flow of 3MGD or less to remove and clean sand and grit debris from their wastewater tanks.  Recently, a rural municipality in Northern Florida benefitted from the sand and grit grant program and utilized U.S. Submergent Technologies (USST) to clean a substantial amount of built-up sand and grit debris from their wastewater tanks while they remained online.

USST’s crews removed, hauled, and disposed of approximately 2,411 tons or over 2,700 cubic yards of sand and grit material from the treatment facility’s aeration basins.  These wastewater tanks had built up over 10-foot-high mounds of sand and grit which was decreasing capacity, increasing the plant’s energy use, and worsening effluent quality.

By restoring capacity USST estimates the City saved more than $7 million in capital expenses to rebuild the treatment capacity.  In other words, the cost of restoring the existing treatment volume is much less than re-building the aeration tank’s treatment volume.  The 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure indicates that most of our nation’s wastewater infrastructure has reached its ‘useful life’; assistance provided through the Florida Sand and Grit Grant Program goes a long way to help rural communities maintain their wastewater infrastructure and provide quality essential services to their residents, by capturing the full useful life.
