SediVision’s Year-round Connection to Punxatawney Phil
Florida-based engineering firm SediVision® LLC has a direct connection to Punxatawney Phil, the world’s most famous groundhog. Sure, we know it’s already March and that Phil has made his appearance for 2025, and we are four weeks into the six more weeks of winter Phil predicted. But our connection story is just too much fun not to share.
SediVision engineering firm brought dark water visibility and mapping to the water and wastewater industry. We soft-launched the product in 2018-2019 and, since that time, have scanned 1,479,053 square feet in 210 tanks at 102 facilities. We bring visibility to dark water, mapping the location and quantity of sediment in tanks, oxidation ditches, and other wastewater infrastructure.
Punxatawney Phil, as most people know, has been around much longer than SediVision. The official celebration of Groundhog Day in Punxatawney, Pennsylvania, dates to 1887, and aspects of the tradition extend much further back to its roots in Europe.
So How Is SediVision Connected to Groundhog Day?

The team at SediVision is proud to include a born and raised Punxatawney native, our Senior Data Analyst and Geologist, Caroline Dunkel. Caroline joined our team in 2021. She holds a Master of Science in Geology from Bowling Green State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geoscience with a focus in Mineral Resource Exploration, and a Minor in GIS from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
At SediVision, Caroline is responsible for overseeing our 3D digital mapping and data processing of sand and grit in wastewater infrastructure. She is also the daughter of Tom Dunkel.
As Caroline explains, Tom “has been in Punxatawney Phil’s inner circle since 2012 but has served as President since 2022. He is the only second-generation President in the organization because my grandfather served as President many years prior.
“My dad loves Punxsutawney, and he loves Groundhog Day. I am very proud of his work, devoting his time to making it a bigger and better holiday every year. This year, I joined in the fun virtually and had the pleasure of watching my father speak to Punxatawney Phil in “Groundhogese” to deliver the forecast.

“Groundhog Day is a lighthearted tradition, but it also symbolizes a moment of change. In the movie, Bill Murray’s character breaks free from the time loop by making a shift to become a better person. It’s a great reminder for all of us to take a moment to reflect on our growth and the changes we can make for a brighter future!”
We’re not sure if Caroline also speaks “Groundhogese,” but we do know she is an amazing data analyst. Although SediVision data mapping speaks for itself in many ways, SediVision clients also greatly benefit from the added insights Caroline brings to every project. She helps wastewater utility managers make informed budgeting and maintenance decisions based on the reliable data SediVision provides.
Much like the Groundhog Day movie, SediVision technology also speaks to change. SediVision means no more reliance on the unsafe and unreliable results of estimates and probing. With SediVision mapping, utility managers know with certainty the location of grit and debris in their tanks, helping them better optimize energy consumption and efficiency and assess loss of capacity within their systems.
