Part 5 of the USST Safety Series: Exceeding Expectations for Wastewater Workplace Safety

U.S. Submergent Technologies continues its 12-part safety series, focusing in this article on the correlation between high expectations and wastewater workplace safety.

High Expectations = Improved Performance & Safety in the Workplace

Henry Ford is credited with saying, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

While Henry Ford’s quote speaks to the individual’s mindset, it also resonates in the context of team dynamics. Leaders who equip their teams with the necessary training and tools and then set high expectations for performance not only pave the way for success but simultaneously help inspire their teams to set high expectations for themselves. Exceeding expectations means exceeding client, company, and individual expectations.

Safety is never optional in the wastewater workplace. Marginal or subpar safety standards are unacceptable. Performance expectations must be high and fortified by even higher safety expectations.

Every credible leader who strives for workplace performance and safety excellence must address these questions:

  • Do we ensure that expectations are clearly communicated from client to company and from company to employee?
  • Has a task hazard analysis been done, and have all concerns been addressed?
  • Is every worker trained and rehearsed on safety procedures?
  • Do we train teams using verbal, visual, and kinesthetic (performance) methods to ensure that all workers are learning and taking ownership of safety protocols?
  • Do training strategies include both what to do and what not to do?
  • Do we assume all our workers know our safety and performance goals, or do we confirm their knowledge and understanding?

At US Submergent Technologies, mission values include: caring, communicating honestly, and doing our job to exceed our client’s expectations…every single time we serve them.
